As human beings we all have a deep desire to belong. We all want to be accepted and find security. It’s funny how you’ll pray for something and God will start to show you how to work on what you prayed for. For the past little while I’ve been realizing how I’m not truly secure in who God says I am. I don’t know if anyone can ever truly be free from seeking external approval, but this is an area that the Lord has been challenging me in.
We have to find our security in God alone. We have to find our identity in who He says we are. We have to find our belonging and acceptance in Him alone. The only approval we should seek is His. A prayer that I’ve been praying here and there but definitely need to do more is for the Lord to help me to be so secure in who He says I am. I don’t know if you’ve ever met a person who is just so secure in who they are, not in an arrogant way, but in an inviting way. So many people in the world look to others to complete them or give them security, that when you come across a person who doesn’t do that and finds their security entirely from God it’s so refreshing and different. I want to be that, not because of anything I’ve done or my goodness, but because of the God living inside of me. As a Christian I should reflect Jesus and Jesus wasn’t insecure. His security in His identity is what both drew people to Him and caused them to hate Him.
Unfortunately looking for approval or identity in people will always fail because as people we are broken. Everyone has a God sized hole in their soul that can only be filled and satisfied by God, and we need to turn to Him to fill it. I want people to be drawn to me, not because of me but because of the security that I find in Christ alone. I encourage you to pray big, scary prayers to build God’s kingdom not your own. To be so secure and confident in your God given identity that people look at you and say that they want what you have. Not because of your goodness or anything that you’ve done but because of the earth shaking God you serve. You are the light of the world, friend, and light brings comfort, security and sometimes uncomfortable change, not because of the light itself but because of its source.
You are the light of the world. A town(city) built on a hill cannot be hidden.
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead it is put on a stand and gives light to the whole room.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. – Matthew 5:14-16
